Book: Use Cases for MobiChange

When I think of how MobiChange will be used, I imagine a twenty-something carpenter or plumber or shop assistant or courier boy in Mumbai who has spent two weeks worth of his salary to buy a $50 mobile phone.

He can read the English alphabet but doesn’t know how to write or speak a full sentence in English. He has seen a computer but doesn’t know how to use it.

I imagine him trying out MobiChange because one of his friends who works with the local non-profit has told him how useful it is.

It isn't easy at first, and I see him struggling with the simple and supposedly intuitive multi-lingual SMS based menu. After a week or two, I see him learning how to use it and doing some of the things we take for granted on social networks — meeting new people with common interests, finding new ways to entertain himself, benefiting from new opportunities for learning and earning, even sharing his own knowledge and skills with others.

How do you see an open-source, multi-lingual, SMS based social networking platform being used? Do share your ideas in the form of stories like this, one story per book page.

mobi change for the masses

I see the costing a bit more inaccessible for the common man

A 50$ phone would be about 2500 rupees . (Taking the exchange rate of about 50 Rs)
Now this guy would have family to feed , rent to pay (buying a flat out of the reach of the common man).Making friends or social networking is the last thing on his mind. When they use a service they usually see how it benefits them financially.A rickshaw drive would have a second hand phone for 25$ and a monthly incoming rental of 5$

These guys are so tired at the end of the day they just have time to eat and sleep. Most have family saying in their village and those are the people with whom they would want to get in touch.

A phone for 10$ /500 Rs
A phone which allow the user to send money to his village
A phone which gives him information about health related issues
A phone which allows his kid to have all the text books at their finger tips.

This I feel would be true mobi change.

If you're not a 'Slumdog

If you're not a 'Slumdog Millionaire' a 50$ phone is too expensive for you, but you have a chance to win a lot of money like hero of this movie in casino deutschland if you're lucky guy!
